DISABILITY PERSPECTIVE

The reality of Persons with Disability is that we are in a world that is not designed for us.  Disabilities are in the minority so obviously, it is not practical to cater for every condition, but it is also not okay to be excluded only because you are different from the majority.  What is the majority, where do we draw the line?  We should include as many people as possible. The WHO estimates that 15% of all people have disabilities!  Do we allow financial comfort to dilute our appetite for Human Rights?

Our appetite for Human Rights is made visible by the way we treat vulnerable people. Children, the Elderly and PwD.

PwD must be a productive participant, but PwD must be allowed to do things differently.  It is never reasonable to create an environment with rules that PwD cannot meet.  Often it is popular opinion or convenience that creates the rule, not necessity or functionality.  Including PwD are like bathrooms for women and awareness of the customs of different cultures.  A ramp at the door, a plug for a hearing aid, a parking reserved for mobility impaired and an option to use a voice recording will open the world for impairments.
